CGN wins two first prizes at international contest

      Daya Bay Nuclear Power Operations and Management Co Ltd (DNMC), a subsidiary of the China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN), was awarded first prizes in capacity factor and nuclear safety, respectively, during an international safety performance challenge contest held in Paris, France on March 29.

DNMC has maintained a world leading place among nuclear power operators with 36 previous wins in global competitions assessing the overall safety performance of nuclear power units.

The two indicators of capacity factor and nuclear safety are critical in measuring effective nuclear management and operational performance. Capacity factor specifically determines the availability of nuclear power units. Nuclear safety reflects the consecutive days of safe operation without unplanned shutdown of a nuclear unit. Ling Ao unit 1 which is managed by DNMC has safely operated for 4,015 consecutive days as of March 29, ranking first among similar units worldwide.

Daya Bay Nuclear Power Base, located in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, is the largest light-water pressurized water reactor (PWR) nuclear power base in the world. The base has been operating stably since its first unit went into operation in 1994.

Among the total of 72 counts of performance indicators for the 6 units at the base, 49 performance indicators reside in the world’s top quartile, with 43 in the world’s top decile in 2016, according to the World Association of Nuclear Operators.

Daya Bay Nuclear Power Base has safely generated 618 TWh of electricity by the end of 2016, with 223 TWh of electricity exported to Hong Kong.
