CTG puts into use China’s first robot built for piston rod defect detection-1

China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG) announced that it has successfully used a robot to detect corrosion for piston rods at the world’s biggest hydropower station on December 18, debuting China’s first purpose-built robot for piston rod defect detection in hydraulic hoists.

The inspection work was operated at the quick-stop-gate hydraulic hoist machine room located at #1 Unit of the Three Gorges Dam by a maintenance service provider under the China Yangtze Power (CYPC), a listed arm of CTG, and the results showed the robot met the design perimeters.

The robot can replace human to perform inspection jobs for piston rods of various specifications with enhanced accuracy, efficiency and safety. As another brainchild of CYPC through its in-house R&D efforts following state-of-the-art inventions such as the robot for underwater inspection and maintenance, the new robot is an important part of CYPC’s endeavor in building smart power stations.

CYPC plans to further improve the design of this robot and gradually put it into use in other major power stations located along the Yangtze River.
