From January to September 2021, the electricity consumption of the whole society increased year on year and the growth rate of the the tertiary industry maintained rapid growth. The growth rate of the electricity consumption in the country’s 16 provinces has exceeded the national average level. The year-on-year growth rates of the electricity consumption in industrial and manufacturing sectors in the month were lower than the average level of the whole society. The electricity consumption of the building materials and ferrous metal industries increased negatively and the electricity consumption of the chemical and non-ferrous metal industries increased positively during the month.


1. Overall electricity consumption


From January to September, the electricity consumption of the whole society reached 6,165.1TWh, increased year-on-year by 12.9%, in which monthly consumption in September was 694.7TWh, grew by 6.8% year on year.


By sectors, from January to September, the electricity consumption of the primary industry was 75.8TWh, a year-on-year increase of 18.9%; the electricity consumption of the secondary industry was 4,098.0TWh, a year-on-year increase of 12.3%. The electricity consumption of the tertiary industry was 1,082.6TWh, a year-on-year increase of 20.7% and that of residential was 908.8TWh, a year-on-year increase of 7.0%.

In September, the electricity consumption of the primary, secondary and tertiary industries grew by 14.9%, 6.0% and 12.1% respectively, while the residential electricity consumption increased by 3.7% year on year.


2. Electricity consumption by region


From January to September, the electricity consumption of the Eastern, Central, Western and Northeastern China was 2,965.1TWh, 1,156.9TWh, 1,710.8TWh and 332.3TWh respectively, the growth rates in four regions were 13.6%, 13.8%, 12.1% and 8.2%.


In September, the growth rates of the electricity consumption in Eastern, Central, Western and Northeastern China were 7.4%, 9.9%, 4.3% and 3.3% respectively.

From January to September, the growth rate of the electricity consumption in country’s 16 provinces exceeded the national average level, namely: Tibet (22.8%), Hubei (19.2%), Zhejiang (18.1%), Jiangxi (17.9%), Qinghai (17.2%), Fujian (16.8%), Shaanxi (16.7%), Guangdong (16.5%), Sichuan (16.1%), Ningxia (16.0%), Jiangsu (14.9%), Guangxi (14.9%), Chongqing (14.7%), Anhui (14.5%), Guizhou (13.7%) and Hunan (13.5%).


In September alone, the growth of electricity consumption in 15 provinces exceeded the national average level, namely: Jiangxi (27.1%), Fujian (19.3%), Qinghai (18.9%), Hubei (17.6%), Chongqing (17.2%), Shanghai (16.6%), Zhejiang (16.2%), Anhui (11.8%), Xinjiang (11.6%), Guangdong (11.3%), Guizhou (10.1%), Tibet (9.8%), Hunan (8.9%), Beijing (7.5%) and Guangxi (7.2%). 


3. Electricity consumption in industrial and manufacturing sector


From January to September, the industrial electricity consumption nationwide reached 4,021.3TWh, a year-on-year increase of 12.2%, 11.7 percentage points higher than the growth of the same period of last year, accounting for 65.2% of the overall electricity consumption. In September, the national industrial electricity consumption was 436.1TWh, a year-on-year increase of 6.0%, 2.7 percentage points dropped compared to last year, accounting for 62.8% of the monthly electricity consumption.


From January to September, the electricity consumption of the manufacturing industry was 3,079.4TWh, a year-on-year increase of 13.3%, 12.6 percentage points higher compared to the growth of same period of the previous year. Among them, the electricity consumption of the four energy-intensive industries totaled at 1,662.0TWh, increased by 9.5% year-on-year, with the growth rate raised by 7.8 percentage points from the same period of the previous year. The electricity consumption of the high-tech and equipment manufacturing industry was 663.5TWh, an increase of 19.7% year-on-year, 18.6 percentage points higher compared with the same period of the previous year. Electricity consumption of consumer goods manufacturing industry was 415.0TWh, an increase of 16.2% year-on-year, 20.5 percentage points higher than the previous year. Electricity consumption in other manufacturing industries was 338.8TWh, a year-on-year increase of 17.2%, grew by 15.9 percentage points.


In September, electricity consumption of the manufacturing industry was 343.4TWh, a year-on-year increase of 1.7%, down by 7.1 percentage points compared to the same period of the previous year. Moreover, the average daily electricity consumption of the manufacturing industry was 11.45TWh/day, increased by 0.32 TWh/day compared to the same period of last year. Among them, electricity consumption of the four energy-intensive industries totaled at 181.2TWh, decreased by 1.0%, with its growth rate dropped by 9.8 percentage points from the same period of the previous year. The electricity consumption of the high-tech and equipment manufacturing industries was 75.3TWh, an increase of 6.4% year-on-year, 5.4 percentage points lower than the same period of the previous year. Electricity consumption of consumer goods manufacturing industry was 48.2TWh, an increase of 2.3%, with its growth rate dropped by 2.7 percentage points. The electricity consumption of other manufacturing industries was 38.7TWh, a year-on-year increase of 5.9%, which was 3.3 percentage points lower than the same period of the previous year.

4. Electricity consumption in energy-intensive industries


From January to September, the electricity consumption of the chemical industry was 374.0TWh, an increase of 8.9% year-on-year, and the growth rate raised by 9.5 percentage points from the same period of the previous year. The electricity consumption of the building materials industry was 308.4TWh, increased by 12.3% year-on-year, 11.4 percentage points higher over the same period of the previous year. The electricity consumption of the ferrous metal smelting and refining industry was 480.0TWh, an increase of 10.6% year-on-year, which was 8.3 percentage points higher than the same period of the previous year. The electricity consumption of non-ferrous metal smelting and refining industry was 499.6TWh, grew by 7.3%, and the growth rate was 3.9 percentage points higher than the same period of the previous year.


In September, the electricity consumption of the chemical industry was 40.2TWh, increased by 1.8% year-on-year, with its growth rate dropped by 3.4 percentage points compared to the same period of the previous year. The electricity consumption of the building materials industry was 36.3TWh, decreased by 1.9% year-on-year and 12.2 percentage points dropped compared to the same period of the previous year. Electricity consumption of ferrous metal smelting and refining industry was 49.8TWh, a decrease of 4.3% year-on-year, 13.2 percentage points lower than the same period of the previous year. The electricity consumption of the non-ferrous metal smelting and refining industry was 54.9TWh, an increase of 0.7% year-on-year, dropped by 9.7 percentage points.
